What is a
Neuropsychological Evaluation?

brain, neurological, neurology, concussion, traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumor, dementia, mild cognitive impairment

Neuropsychological Evaluations test cognitive abilities, such as memory, attention, language skills, and problem-solving abilities

A Neuropsychological Evaluation measures various aspects of your thinking abilities using a combination of paper/pencil, question/answer, and computerized tests. Unlike brain scans (CT, MRI) which primarily examine the structure of the brain, neuropsychological tests examine how the brain is functioning in key cognitive areas that are important in our life and daily activities.

  • What is a "board-certified clinical neuropsychologist," and why does this matter?
Board Certification in Clinical Neuropsychology is intended to mirror board certification in medicine. Principally, board certification represents acknowledgment by one’s professional peers that one is competent to practice in a designated specialty following thorough examination of one’s knowledge and abilities. Board certification assures the public and the profession that the specialist has successfully completed the education, training, and experience requirements of the specialty including an examination designed to assess the competencies required to provide quality services in clinical neuropsychology. It reflects validation by one’s peers of competency in the specialty of clinical neuropsychology, and consumers of neuropsychological services can be assured that the individual with this certification has stood for and passed an examination of their skills and knowledge. While nearly all physicians are board certified, only approximately 6% of psychologists are board certified. Being board certified in neuropsychology is often a mandatory criteria for hospital medical staff credentialing and performing evaluations in specialized contexts, and adds credibility in forensic and legal settings. It is also important to note that there are many specialized areas in which psychologists can become board certified, but obtaining board certification in neuropsychology is the recommended path for individuals who choose to use the title "Neuropsychologist."
  • What will I actually be doing during a neuropsychological evaluation, and how long does it take?
Neuropsychological evaluations often include multiple components: a clinical interview with a thorough review of your medical, developmental, educational, vocational, and social history; and cognitive testing which may include a combination of computerized tests and paper/pencil or question/answer tests to measure attention, concentration, mental processing speed, learning, memory, language skills, problem solving skills, and visual-spatial skills. All tests measure thinking abilities and there are no invasive medical procedures or brain scans involved. However, because the brain is very complex and responsible for many functions, the evaluation procedures can often take several hours. Sometimes evaluations last 3-4 hours, but other times they may last an entire day.
  • How much does the evaluation cost? Is it covered by insurance?
Dr. LoGalbo does not accept health insurance and all evaluations are cash or self-pay only. Fees typically depend on the nature and purpose of the evaluation, and the amount of time involved. Please contact for more information and an estimate.
  • How will the results of the evaluation benefit me?
This depends on who is seeking or requesting the evaluation, and the specific circumstances. If you are a patient, this evaluation can assist you with developing a better understanding of your cognitive strengths and weaknesses in the context of your medical situation, while also providing important information regarding prognosis and ways to compensate for challenges you may encounter in daily life. In other settings, this evaluation may be requested by your employer or other organization to provide information regarding your ability to perform tasks or responsibilities in a safe and accurate manner, or to determine qualification for disability, as it pertains to cognitive abilities and relevant aspects of your medical history. If you are an attorney, this evaluation may assist you in objectively measuring and documenting your client's cognitive strengths and weaknesses as they pertain to neurological functioning in the context of litigation. Regardless of the purpose of the evaluation, Dr. LoGalbo takes pride in not only providing a detailed description of performance and test results, but also an analysis of what these results mean in terms of daily life and the future, as well as specifically tailored recommendations to assist in maximizing functional capacity.
  • Which medical conditions or concerns might warrant a neuropsychological evaluation?
Neuropsychological evaluations can be used to diagnose certain suspected neurological conditions such as mild cognitive impairment or dementia, or to better understand the cognitive and behavioral impacts of known neurological conditions. Common referrals include concerns regarding memory loss, concentration problems, or uncharacteristic disruptive behavioral changes. Neurological conditions that may benefit from a neuropsychological evaluation include traumatic brain injury (TBI), concussion, stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), multiple sclerosis, brain tumor, epilepsy or seizure disorder, and mild cognitive impairment or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.
  • My AME or letter from the FAA indicates that I need a neuropsychological evaluation. What does this involve?
This depends on why your AME or the FAA is indicating that this evaluation is required. FAA neuropsychological evaluations may be required for multiple different reasons, including through participation in the HIMS program, under the SSRI protocol, for those with a history of ADHD/ADD or who have previously taken ADHD/ADD medication (e.g., stimulants such as Ritalin or Adderall), and for individuals who may have potential neurocognitive impairment related to a neurological or other medical condition (e.g., stroke, TIA, head injury, or HIV). Detail is often provided in the letter you received. The reason for the evaluation often also dictates the testing that needs to be performed, length of the evaluation, and fees involved. Dr. LoGalbo has undergone training in aviation psychology and has experience conducting these evaluations and consulting with AMEs, so he can explain the process and answer additional questions you may have.
  • I am an attorney. How else might you be able to assist me?
Neuropsychological evaluations can be used to identify and elucidate precise neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric diagnoses in the context of suspected or known injury, illness, or disease. Having an expert with extensive clinical experience is a must, and in legal settings, certain credentials such as board certification in clinical neuropsychology carries substantial clout. Even if an evaluation has already been performed by another provider or expert, you may benefit from consultation services to include a thorough review of the evaluation performed, your client's medical records, or other materials to identify potential additional supporting evidence, or challenges, weaknesses, omissions, misinterpretations, or other common errors to procedures conducted or conclusions drawn. Consultation can also assist in preparing lines of questioning during depositions or cross examination of treating doctors or other expert testimony where neurocognitive or neuropsychiatric issues pertain.
  • What other credentials does Dr. LoGalbo have?
In addition to holding board-certification in clinical neuropsychology, Dr. LoGalbo is a tenured Associate Professor of Psychology at Florida Tech, where he oversees the neuropsychology emphasis area, teaches classes in neuropsychology and psychopharmacology, supervises clinical psychology graduate students performing neuropsychology practicum, serves on multiple committees at the university and in the local community, and engages in scholarly activity and collaborative research. He has published several articles in professional peer-reviewed journals and co-authored multiple textbooks. He is a member of several professional organizations as well, including American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, International Neuropsychology Society, National Academy of Neuropsychology, Sports Neuropsychology Society, and American Psychological Association.
